Where do you get your seed potatoes ?

The rest, do you sow seed direct into allotment or in pots/greenhouse then plant out ?

Our local garden centre has had them in for the last month or so but if you can't get them locally there are lots of firms offering them on line at present. Just type in "potatoes for Autumn planting". I grow them at home at this time of the year rather than down on the allotment as they will need frost protection.

It is too late to start off most of the things listed above for this year, you need to get most Winter crops started by July. But depending upon where you live there is still time to sow spring cabbage for an early crop next year.

Three other things you can get in over the next couple of months are Japanese onions, garlic and broad beans. The onion sets and garlic are in garden centres now. There are varying views as to when to plant but I usually put them in at the beginning of October. Have a look round your site to see what other plotholders are doing.

The most commonly recommended variety of broad bean for Autumn sowing is Aquadulce Claudia. Sow this direct into the ground about the beginning of November, or a little earlier if you live in a cold part of the country, following the instructions on the packet.

I got my spuds at the garden centre

A garden centre type place is a good place for indicators what's good to plant and when. Basically, if they've got the plants, they're good to go out

My old garlic (forgotten in pots) has just started to sprout. So it seems garlic would be a good one to get started now. I am on the roof, so I get a 2-3 week head start to gardeners on the ground. So you should be good to go with garlic.

I've got beetroot, turnips and radishes in and they are coming up just fine. Am in the south and it's still pretty warm here. There are some varieties of lettuce that can be grown throughout winter, plus kale and rocket, broad beans and garlic. Don't know how successful that lot will be but I googled and the general advice seemed to be you can plant those things now but you will need to protect when it's cold.

Bulbs need to go in soon if you grow flowers.

Everything is still growing fine I had a severe attack of leek moth and the only chance I had of rescuing the situation was to take a chance and cuts the tops right back to ground level, some internet sites said that it was too late to cut the tops back as they wouldn't have time to grow new leaves but I went to the allotment today and the tops had grown 3 inches in less than a week. Get planting while the ground is still warm and things will get away quickly.

Hello, I'm just starting out too and I've put an internet order (ebay) for carrots, onions, lettuce, kale, peas and garlic. I'm not sure about this winder planting business but i'm going to do half in the ground and half in the greenhouse to see what happens! If the stuff in the ground doesn't grow i've always got whats in the greenhouse to fall back on!

A word of advice kale grows pretty big and and needs quite a bit of room to grow and I believe that garlic needs frost to grow so the greenhouse may not be suitable.

I grow garlic on my allotment from march/April this year harvested in July and didn't need a frost. I have heard it help having a frost but I got fairly decent crop.

I recently planted some Winter onions to harvest in May. I am going to plant some green manure soon on some bare beds.
