Weekly Comps - another suggestion

Options
Following on from the poll and discussion about weekly comps, I have another suggestion and would appreciate some feedback.

Could we, between us bump every single comp on the weekly board (that has not been bumped within the last week) to say that we have checked it and either found that it is still going or to say that the link is dead? That way, we could get the list on the front page updated so that we know exactly how many comps are still live?

Thoughts please.

    That's a really good idea.
I went through a few last night with the intention of making a list and then putting it on here to see who could take responsibility for posting the comps on main board.
I came across a few that were either a) definitely already posted weekly on the main board, or b) expired.
I haven't got much time this morning but if I get time later on I'll go through them again and bump the relevant ones.

Thanks. I think we should wait before doing it, perhaps until this evening. That way, if anyone comes up with a good reason why we should not do it, we don't upset them by bumping. At least by bumping each one, we don't duplicate what we are checking.

I would deal with weeklies like this:

They should be posted on the main board with an end date for the end of the current week. This would ensure end-daters don’t lose out.

While the comp is live, the OP may choose to update the comp at the end of each week to move the end date forward a week. They, or someone, should also bump the comp to bring it back to the top of the list at the start of each new week.

If the OP doesn’t alter the date, either because they don’t want to, or because they forget, then that thread will move to Game Over. They or anyone else can then post the next week’s comp to a new thread. Or if the BGs don't mind, they could be pmed to ask them to update the end date and keep the thread live. Again, someone should bump for the start of each new week.

It would be helpful (but not essential) if the OP would state in their opening post whether they plan to amend the end date or not, so that we can pm them with a reminder if it seems they forgot. It’s probably best to mention on the post if a reminder has been sent, so the OP isn’t inundated with reminders.

If people would like the weeklies crossed referenced in the regs thread, that could be done the same way that dailies are. But it would be worth checking after a while to see if people are using it. Otherwise it’s just a waste of time.

My final point is that the way to ensure that people do not miss out is to encourage people to subscribe and tick for instant notifications in the Opening Post. That way, it shouldn’t matter even if the thread does go to Game Over, or if the OP is behind with changing the end date. People will always bump to add useful information, including a link to a new thread, where one is made. So if the first week is posted on the main board, with an end date for that week, as long as people subscribe to receive notifications, I think far fewer people would miss out on doing any they want.

I know all that reads as long-winded and complicated, but it’s one of those things that’s probably harder to write about than to actually do.

That bit's true. Also those who don't visit regulars would not miss out either.

I don't think this is a good idea:

    a) Those who sort the board by thread start time would never see that the thread has been bumped and the date extended.

    b) End-daters and even those who sort by last post time, who have ticked the comp the first time they entered, might well see their tick and ignore the comp the following week thinking they have already entered.

    c) The BG's might move the comp to GO before the OP has a chance to amend it, even where the OP intends to do it.

    d) I think BG's would not welcome extra requests to update the end date or retrieve comps from GO

Ah well, back to the drawing board then. Although, if people subscribe for notifications, they would be updated with any changes, but I do take your points on board. Thanks One-Eye.

    I agree with One-Eye.

But back to the initial suggestion, would anyone have any objection if cagsd and I were to bump each thread in the present weekly board if we checked if they were still current? Anyone else want to help?

That's defo still running on Facebook, cos I enter it every week!
I usually enter it directly from FB as it comes up on my news feed, but I'm not sure whether I initially got a comp from here or not???

It's a twitter comp on here that was running weekly, why would they lock a weekly thread though? I hadn't looked to see if it was also listed up there for fb.
