Car Insurance renewal

In August this year I paid for my nephews car insurance withmy visa debit card .He gave me the cash and I helped him get his insurancecheaper by searching online for him. He has a different surname to me and healso lives at a different address. Next year when the insurance is up for renewalI will not be paying on my card again for him. The question I want to ask iscan the insurance company take the money for the renewal from my card next yearwithout consulting me first

  • It depends what their terms say, but lots of companies do auto-debit the card they have on file for renewal. You should ask your nephew to request the insurance company remove the card details from their system.
  • Normally when buying he will have had to give confirmation that he was authorised to use the card and acknowledge that itll be reused in future years. If the sales done online its generally in the T&Cs you have to click to say you agree to before being able to buy.

You have two options, firstly is to call your card issuer and tell them you want to cancel the Continuous Payment Authority. Most banks are poorly trained in this area and will tell you they cannot do it but they can. The downside is that it will cancel ALL CPAs you have with that merchant so may cause a problem if you also have your own insurance through the same company.

The other option would be to get your nephew to call them and update their payment details to their own card/ whoever is going to takeover doing this for them and get the insurer/broker to confirm that this replaces the original card and isnt supplementary to it
