Windows 8 update locking

We have a fairly new Toshiba laptop and it's trying to run a Windows 8 update. It says it's getting ready to update, then locks. We have googled a solution, but nothing helps. We can't interrupt this as it starts as soon as we turn on

Does anyone have any suggestions please ?

    Have you run the update trouble shooting tool? Are you still on 8 or 8.1?

    Sorry just re-read. So if you reboot it just does the same thing on booting?

    Yes. Have taken out the battery and switched back on. It goes straight into update mode so don't get the chance to do anything.

    Can you boot into the recovery menu? Hold shift on startup and keep hammering away at F8. Hopefully this will bring up the menu and you can try a repair, or go back to an earlier restore point.

    Tried that, but it doesn't work It goes back to "preparing to configure windows"

    Do you have bootable media? A windows disc or a recovery USB?

    We have a USB so will try sorting it with that tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

    Hopefully the recovery USB will get you into the advanced startup menu and let you repair or rollback from the bad update to your last good restore point.
