Thinking of going away for a short break over Christmas. On our own for the first time. I like somewhere with lots of history. OH likes big cities. Must be accessible on foot. Anywhere in UK or Europe. Budget around £600-£700 for around 4 days flights and accommodation.

Prague is a lovely place. I have spent New Year there but not Christmas but I think it would be a great place to spend Christmas and there would most likely be snow.
In this country I would say York, Edinburgh, London. Probably be dearer in this country than abroad though as the hotels raise their prices to a ridiculous amountThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

Well it wasn't when I went there! First time was about 20 years ago and you weren't allowed to bring money out so me and OH were frantically trying to spend on our last day. Bearing in mind that we hadn't changed up much money anyway and we had eaten just about every meal out for the 5 days we were there.
The second time was about 10 years ago and although not as cheap as the first time it was still pretty cheap, certainly much cheaper than places like France, Barcelona etc.
I thought lots of hen and stag parties go there because it is cheapThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

I went to Prague last year, it wasn't cheap but I don't think it was the most expensive place I have stayed in Europe. I found Rome and Vienna very expensive but perhaps I was just unlucky.
I think Krakow is good value and I loved it. I'm not sure how expensive it would be at Christmas, I think most hotels would be more expensive then but I have always been at home for Christmas. I really like the idea of going away and not having to cook another Christmas dinner.Sell £1500

Sorry budget is each. So I suppose around £1500. Want somewhere with historic interest, nice views, good museums and good local food.0

You say UK is an option. If you look at the premier inn website, you'll find several major cities where the room rates are £29 per night over Xmas.
I had a quick look at Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle and all cities have the city centre premier inns for £29 per night.
Leaves plenty of budget for food, sightseeing, trips etc etc0
