First Time to Majorca ... Which resort

Ryan air have some pretty decent prices for flights during school holidays next summer to Palma so I'm thinking of Majorca for our 2015 holiday. We'd look to book flights and accommodation separate but I've no idea on the best or most suitable resorts despite several hours research online.

Family of 4, 2 lads aged 9 & 5, would like somewhere which nice beach, but not a huge resort. Somewhere that's not too built up too or a 'british resort in the sun'
Although we appreciate it will be busy at July/August time.

We've been to Brittany and Menorca as beach locations in the past to give you an idea of our likes in terms or resorts.

Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Cala Bona would probably fit that bill. It's on the east coast of the island, next to Cala Millor.

It's predominantly a fishing village with a harbour on one and a decent beach on the other. It's a lot quieter than Cala Millor and not, in my experience, overly 'British' (although there's bound to be an element of that on any Majorcan beach resort).

I have been to majorca many times and have enjoyed every holiday I have been on. I avoid Magaluf and Palma Nova as they are for clubbers. I have been to Sa Coma, Silliot, Cala D'or, Alcudia, Calas De Mallorca, Playa De Muro. My favs are Cala D'or nice little cove beaches with nice little town and Sa Coma with bigger beach with good restaurants and shops. have been when my kids were small, with the grandchildren last year and as long as they have a nice pool and a beach nearby they were happy.
If i knew the answers to all the questions i wouldn't be on here :p

I was in Cala Major this summer, reasonably quiet within a short (20-30) minute bus ride of Magaluf & 15 or so minutes to Palma Nova, cracking wee beach & everything you need. Not so much if the youngest isn't up to walking up & down hills as it does have a wee bit of a hike up the hill to some of the hotels. (Where I was it was a decent hill - but not problematic for someone fit & healthy enough) Good thing is it's relatively low down the list for your standard lads/lasses holidays so reasonably quiet.

  • Alcudia. Beach is beautiful. Shallow sea area aswell. On the level [mostly]. Not really built up. Only snag is travel time from airport. Also has a water park, and go-kart track.

One of the hotels also has free access to the water park. Cant remember which one though. Sorry
  • I can recommend Sa Coma, Cala Bona and Peurto Pollensa. All have sandy beaches with Sa Coma probably the most 'modernised'. I could highly recommend the Coma Gran Aparthotel in Sa Coma ( Thomson Hotel) it has some of the best reviews on trip advisor you will get. Are you sure booking independent is the cheapest option? At the moment you can probably get one child free with some holidays through Thomson/Thomas Cook etc and potentially the holiday is a bit securer.
  • We went to Alcudia this summer with our 3 boys - aged 13, 10 and 8. Club Mac is a huge hotel complex which has free access into the Hidropark - a small waterpark. .... though the hotel is a bit like Butlins in the sun.

Another vote for Alcudia here, my wife is actually there at present via a bargain Jet2 holiday
  • Had a lovely October break in Cala D'Or a couple of years ago.

Stayed at Hotel Cala D'or which is right on beach.

Its a fair way from Airport, we used pre-booked taxi, think it was about £50 each way.

Went to Alcudia many years ago, fantastic beach, I didntlike the inland waterways/canals though, PITA if you have a pushchair.
It was pretty Kraut-ed up as well, though that may have changed.

I've only been to Majorca once so can't make comparisons. I think we struck lucky with Portocolom. Lovely little resort with a very manageable sized beach.

Majorca is lovely for families not too long to fly from UK and some great beaches etc. We are off there in a couple of weeks ourselves however children are grown up so my advice is out of date. My sister who has younger children likes Alcudia although it is a bit of a trek from the airport compared to some of the others.
