Agreed this what I have recently done. A bar of car detailers clay , mold it in your fingers till it is pliable and then work across the screen in circular pattern lubricating screen with soapy water.
It removes all the smeary film nothing else gets to .
wash screen well with clean water after

OK who or what is a car detailer and/or clay?
  • Just a bar of clay, try ebay or a car cleaning website, or if you're rich try Halfords.
You can get a kit with detailing spray, but you don't need this; but can use it when drying the car off after washing.

    Don't buy cheap wiper-blades.

My wiper blades were virtually disintegrating, and Lidl were doing some on special offer for (I think) £5 the pair, so I got some, thinking they would tide me over until I could find some better ones online. Two years later, they are still working well. I had to take a pack where the passenger side was 1" shorter than standard, but I can live with that. I will probably replace them in time for winter, just for peace of mind, but they have been incredibly good value.

Someone has even said - petrol

That is an incredibly stupid suggestion.......

Get fuel on your hands one day, try washing it off, it leaves a film of nasty greasy stuff.

You could fairy liquid, you just need something that'll break down grease.
All in one car cleaner/wax will not work.

I personally use an alcohol based spray on window cleaner.

Halfords used to sell a liquid called 'glass cutter' which they recommended for use before putting on Rain-X or their own brand alternative. It's a slightly abrasive liquid, a bit like a mild T-cut. I cleaned an apparently clean windscreen with it, and the cloth came off filthy. Afterwards, it was like the screen wasn't there. Excellent stuff, but I don't think they sell it any more.

thanks all. tried undiluted Lidl w/screen wash, and newspaper (3 x). Off with cold water. Next day,, fantastic. What was the residue - don't know. Didn't spend the money on anything expensive, but i am sure it would be worthwhile/longterm
