I'm told by EDF that to change tariff they need to ring me up and read out the T&Cs of the new tariff. This will take about 15 mins and there's no other way they can do this.
Do other suppliers act like this, and if so, why?

Been there and had the call. In many cases, it depends how you switch. They are just covering themselves in case you try to argue 'but you didn't tell me that' and so on.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Switch online via 'My Account' and presumably click 'yes' when it asks you to read and accept the T&C's?No free lunch, and no free laptop0

EDF's interpretation of this perhaps:

it is supposed to help the customer experience!!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Standard of conduct underpins everything – It basically means OFGEM can prosecute for things that are not directly covered by a license condition.
In this case those it was an impact of RMR possibly SLC 23A. Essentially OFGEM wanted an end to pressurised sales, they wanted sales to be a 2 step process. Step 1 sale agreed and paper work received. Step 2 contract accepted. The idea of introducing a gap is to give customers time to consider the decision without the pressure of being on the phone.0 -
Like macman says, go via the online account and you don't have to get the call. I have just done it this way to swap to the new Blue+ promise tariff. Thanks to advice from people here I am debt free - thank you to you all! Now working on the mortgage!0
