Halogen hob not working properly

I hope someone may be able to advise me on the best course of action. Ever since we moved into our new home a couple of years ago there has been a problem with a couple of rings on our cooker hob. The two smaller rings seem to work fine, we can control the heat with no problem at all however with both of the two larger rings it seems to be a case of all or nothing, I can put a pan of water on, bring it to the boil at no 9, once it is boiling turn the dial down as low as it will go but it makes no difference at all, instead of going down to a gentle simmer it carries on boiling at full pelt.

As there are just two of us most of the time I've managed to work around it but it looks as if I may be cooking Christmas lunch this year so I'm keen to have a fully working hob. Does this sound as if it can be repaired or do I need to replace the hob.

Many thanks

Bet x

Unfortunately there's nothing on the hob that identifies who the manufacturer is or what model, I'll have another look on the instruction leaflet when I get home later to see if I can find any more info but as far as I can remember that was also very basic.

  • The manufacturer is Euro Kera but I can't find any reference to a model, it is the type with knobs rather than a touch pad.

EuroKera are the guys who make the glass. The link i put here tells you how to find the manufacturer of the Hob.
  • Thanks for the link, I'll keep looking, I've checked the leaflet and it just refers to 'the manufacturer' so that's not much help.

  • Sounds to me that the control stats have gone (the bit under the control knob). i think it is called a potentiometer.

They can be replaced provided you have the manufacturer and model details.

unless you know a bit about electric i would call a local appliance tradesman to do it.
  • Many thanks, think I'd better get someone in, my knowledge of electrics is limited to changing lightbulbs and fuses in plugs, hope it won't cost too much, it's one thing after another at the moment, just waiting for the plumber to arrive now to have a look at our water tank :(

  • Ask the plumber if he knows anyone, they normally have contacts they can call
