changing car

Hi,
I'm hoping this may be fairly simple, but just don't know how car insurers work and whether it could be a minefield, so advice would be appreciated.
My car insurance is due for renewal at the start of October, about a month later my parents will no longer need one of their cars and will be giving it to me, but they will need it up to that point.
If I compare deals and get the best deal for my current car, what happens when I need to change cars? Do I have to go with my existing policy and pay whatever upgrade is demanded, or can I search around cancelling the existing policy and taking out a new one.
I'm sure this must be a common scenario, but wasn't sure the best money saving way to go about it.
Also as an aside - what happens if I have both cars for a short period of time whilst I am working out what to do wth the old one?
Many thanks for your help
Ian

  • Assuming there is no overlap then those are your two options, do a change of vehicle and pay an admin fee + any change in premium or cancel the existing policy and pay a cancellation fee + buy a new policy.

If you have both for a while then things get more complex and the key to this is the fact you can only use 1 NCD on 1 policy at a time. Your real options therefore are to do whatever you are going to do re the above and then add the second car to the policy as a Temporary Additional Vehicle, buy temp car insurance on the uninsured vehicle or SORN it and take it off the road thus not requiring it to have insurance.
  • Thank you.
