Cheap ferry to Ireland?

Really want to take the kids to Southern Ireland at the end of August but shocked at ferry prices! Want to go around the 19th for a week but flexible which day of week we sail if that makes a diference and hopefully from Holyhead. Would like to take car so 4 people and a car. Did look into flying which is cheaper but would need to hire a car at the other end which seemed to make prices around the same again

When we get there can you just book into B n B's enroute? Are there plenty? Or a good place for a holiday cottage base? Help peoples, worried I am leaving it too late

Thanks.
I will be rich :rotfl:

horrendously expensive. they really need speedferries to get a boat to do this crossing (they do france-uk) and it may be worthwhile telling them. There is so much to do in ireland (i lived there for 3 years) that it is hard to say. In and around Dublin nice if you like a bit of shopping and just seeing the capital and you are not far from the Wicklow mountains for Glendalough for the walks and a 9th century monastery etc. However i find the most stunning scenery if you like wildnerness is the west coast. I want to show my partner round Ireland at some stage and I would probably choose - if was doing an extended holiday - to do a few days in and around Dublin and then the rest on the west coast - near Dingle or Kerry (though I think Dingle is magnificent). but Galway is also nice and young and you can visit the islands from there too. let us know what you come up with. i had also thought about putting toghether a website to get cheap group bookings for people (only get really good discounts if you are a foot passenger) but I thought if i put a site together and get everyone's commitment - by paying in advance maybe through a site people could benefit from cheapest foot passenger rates and other discounts for theatres, etc etc. be interesting to see if woudl interest people.

Unfortunately, the reason the price is so expensive is because of the longer duration of the crossing. Many people compare the rates on the Irish Sea to those on Dover-Calais, but, forget that the crossing is three times longer and so fuel costs to the ferry companies are that much more expensive.

Try www.cheaperferries.com for savings on ferry crossings.
