Credit card applications declined, but nothing bad on credit report

Forgive me if this is a common thread and I am just adding to the masses that have already been answered, but I am hoping somebody can offer some advice on my credit card application issues.

I have tried to apply for credit cards with Halifax and MBNA, both online and in branch (Halifax). Every credit search was declined. I obtained credit reports from Experian and Equifax. The only problems were that I hadn't lived at my address for longer than 3 years (Equifax) and that I hadn't had any previously settled credit (Experian).

This would be my first credit card. I have never missed payments, have no CCJs and have nothing even mildly bad on my reports.

Could anybody hazard a guess as to why my searches keep declining?!

I have a good job/salary and consider myself to be sensible with money, so the fact that this appears to be so difficult is quite annoying!!!

Appreciate any advice you may have.

Thanks.

What existing credit accounts do you have on your credit files?

Do you have any existing debts?

  • I only have my current account. No other credit cards, no other debts.

If you have no credit history whatsoever that is as good as having a bad credit history and you'll be rejected from most mainstream cards. You need to start with a card specifically for people with no/bad credit history. Capital one and barclaycard do one I believe.

Alternatively the bank you hold your current account with may give you one and you may not even need a credit check. Lloyds gave me a duo amex card in this way when I was about 19!
  • I thought as much! I guess I will just have to build up slowly!! Thanks for your replies!
