Travel Insurance for high altitude

Hi there,

Was wondering if anyone knows of any decent travel insurance covering for trekking over 4000m altitude. The ones I've found have a huge jump up in price. We'll be in Peru and Bolivia for a few weeks, most trekking being below 4000m but we will have the odd moment when we go above.

Cheers! :)

Search for adventure/activity Travel Insurance. Then it is a case of having to phone around and seeing what they come back with.

Harrison Beaumont brokers have a long history of arranging cover for many different types of activities and are worth a try.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

The BMC cover and customer service are very good, or at least they were a few years ago when a traveling companion of mine fell off a mountain in Spain and had to make use of his insurance, and their trekking package goes up to 5000m. The downside is that it's only available to BMC members, which can make it quite expensive if you're not a member already; IIRC the membership fee was more than the actual cover in my case.

PJ Haymen also have very good cover and they cover for £50k of search and rescue cover
  • Thank you for these tips everyone. I haven't had any luck yet but I'll keep on looking.
  • Search on here, its been asked before. There are a couple of high street providers who dont mention altitude restrictions on policies.
