Could claiming under travel insurance affect your Home insurance?

Hi,

Not sure about this though I have filled in many home and contents insurance quotes in the past.

if I remember correctly they ask you if anyone in your household has claimed say in the last 3 years.

Daughter went to Spain recently and got her iphone stolen. Luckily she had travel insurance and was able to claim under that.

Just wondering as she is living with us, could that affect any home and contents cover quotes I may get in future?

Thanks for any replies.

Quite often when you claim on Travel policies, they ask whether you have any Home Insurance that covers items away from home. If details were provided they might have contacted your Home Insurers. So you should ask your daughter whether she gave details of the Home Insurance.

There is a question on Home Insurance declarations as to whether you have suffered any losses whether insured or not and this usually relates to the home. I suppose technically you would have to declare the loss, but whether Home Insurers would actually note a Travel Insurance claim, it is not something I have known them to do.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • No travel insurance has nothing to do with home insurance unless it is an extension of the home policy.
  • Huckster is correct and SteveWyatt incorrect

In most travel policies they will attempt to bring the home insurer in as co-insurer for a claim for lost items. If they are successful depends on the terms of both policies but would count as a claim on the home insurance if they are successful.

Typically Home only used to ask about Claims when doing a new business quote but there are some starting to ask about incidents in which case a lost phone in theory should be declared and given there will be knowledge of the loss within the insurance industry its a bit of a risk to "forget" to declare it. That cup of coffee you spilled last week that you just covered up by moving a rug isnt going to be in any database anywhere.
