Reclaim energy bill credit

Hi guys,
Today I received weekly email from MSE, on it mentioned 3.5 million could be owed money from not returning any credit to customer after they switch suppliers.
Before I switched from Eon to Npower last few payments didn't get paid before the switch so I had an arrears to pay.
However in the past I have been in credit, like throughout summer, missed a payment and they still send you a letter saying you owe X amount even though you were in credit.
So maybe it is possible although I had £1000 arrears before I switched maybe they didn't take any credit I may of had off that, I called Eon today to see if it was possible for them to send my last statement through and they said they couldn't.
Its probably all correct but would be nice to check, if they don't have my last statement of payments available what would happen if I stopped paying my arrears and they took me to court they wouldn't have my last statement as evidence?

Hi welshmatt983
Thought it might help if I give you a bit of information about today's announcement concerning unclaimed credits on closed accounts.
Following a change of supplier or home move, we close an account and automatically refund any credit balance. That is, provided we have all the information we need to do this.
Difficulties arise where we don't have the relevant information. This may include the name of a customer (eg occupier accounts/short term lets), no forwarding address or no final meter readings.
Sometimes, a customer forgets to cancel a Standing Order and this leads to a credit balance.
We've been trying to track down customers with outstanding credit balances for quite a while now. To help, we've joined an industry wide campaign to try to raise awareness of this issue.
As there was a debit balance on the account when you left, it's highly unlikely you'll be eligible for a refund under this scheme.
You can, though, have a copy of any statement on your account and I'm sorry if you were told differently.
Were you registered with our website whilst we supplied you? If you were, previous statements can be seen on there by logging in with your username and password. You can download and print them too.
If we need to send you copies, we currently charge £3 per bill. We only charge for a maximum of 3 bills per request (£9), though, regardless of how many copies asked for.
Hope this is of interest welshmatt983. Let me know if I can help further as happy to do so.
