Flowers for teachers, appropiate?

Hi All,

My son is in yr 11 now and for the last couple of years he has had a really good English teacher. I am in contact with a few of his teachers so I can keep an eye out on how he is doing and we can sort out any issues by having regular communication. Now his English teacher is a really lovely woman who has really supported my son and has done a lot to help him in the last couple of year. I didnt really send her anything at the end of year as it's normal because my teenage son refuses to be seen giving a present to a teacher, fair enough :D

Anyway I want to send her a bunch of flowers to say thank you for helping my son etc. The only address I have is the school so they will go there, do you think this is appropiate? I dont want to embarrass her or anything.

What does everyone think?

Female :) I am the mum
  • As a former teacher who occasionally received such from grateful students, I think, as you are female and there is no risk of a mixed message, that you will absolutely make her day.

Good for you for being so thoughtful!

If the flowers came with a thank you from the parents/son and you/family (whatever fits in with your home situation) for the support she has given your son, it would probably be alright although it depends a bit on the school - I can think of some staff rooms where flowers from a parent would be seen as too personal a gift while, in others, gifts directly from a parent were normal and acceptable.

I'd personally just send a really nice card. Am sure she'd love the flowers though - but expect her to say something to your son which may well embarrass him even more. She'd probably think it rude to not say something if she passed him at school...

Someone mentioned the staff room - I presume she'd have to find a vase and have them sit somewhere public all day. Might be a bit niggling for others who've also taught him and felt they did a good job too...

I think I'd wait and send them for Christmas with an appropriate note rather than at the very beginning of term when the uncharitable could interpret it as a "bribe" for future extra help rather than a thank you. (some staff rooms can be very biatchy)

  • I agree with waiting until Christmas now, the moment has gone for the end of the year and the start feels a bit like sucking up for preferential treatment (not that this is your intention!)

I would also suggest a less showy gift so your son is not embarrassed perhaps the same amount of money in a John Lewis Gift Voucher instead?

I wouldn't risk alienating the others at this point.

However I would be tempted to send in some big boxes of biscuits for the last week of term after your son has left so he can't be embarrassed.

My next door neighbours at one point were teachers............. and the parents were very generous- however as one of them pointed out to me flowers were lovely except she would be going away at term end so often she didn't get to appreciate them - same with wine and chocolates -often they weren't the right ones eg plain v milk chocolate or red v white wine. I'd go for a voucher too.

well that is why if I sent her the flowers now, she could appreciate them as she will be home?

I am not sure about vouchers, it almost feels like giving her money? I dont know just me but I would feel unconfortable and am not sure how she would take it?

How about a basket of cakes? maybe she could share with the others?
