No Claim Bonus as second driver
Hello all
Can i use my NCB against an insurance where i am named as the second driver.
Also
A year ago i insured my vehicle with my 10 year NCB. On completion of the insurance i was sent an NCB certificate showing 9 years. No claim was ever made during the tenure of the insurance.

NCB follows the policyholder - to use your NCB on a policy you generally have to take the policy out in your own name. This doesn't necessarily preclude you from being the second driver - some insurers might insist that the policyholder is the main driver, some don't mind someone else being the main driver so long as you tell them, and some actively don't care which of the drivers is the main driver and price on the assumption that the riskiest driver will usually be driving. Just make sure you read the questions and the assumptions carefully.
Most insurers only recognise a maximum of 9 (or even 5) years NCB, and many have computer systems which aren't set up to keep track of larger NCBs. Hence the fact that your certificate says 9 years. If you think it's important you could contact the insurer and ask them to confirm how many years you had at the start of the policy, or if you still have last year's renewal letter you could offer that to your new insurer as evidence of your unbroken claims history, but you'll probably find that your insurance quotes don't change much, if at all, on going from 9 to 11 years NCB.0 -

.
Normally the NCD is awarded to the policyholder, but some insurers may give it to the main driver irrespective of who is the policyholder (eg RAC)
Or are you a named driver on another's policy wanting to take out a second policy? In that case see if the current insurer offers any deals for named drivers on their policies to be given NCD against a policy bought off them.0 -

Remember that NCD can only be used on one policy at a time and so to "use your NCD" you'd need to ensure its not being used on any other policy.
Normally a Named Driver cannot contribute NCD to a policy, there is one exception with one insurer where they want the NCD to come from the Main Driver rather than the Policyholder. Normally this is one and the same person but if you were a Named and Main driver but not the policyholder and the NCD wasnt being used elsewhere then with this one insurer you could use it.0 -
I can confirm that the NCB has not or will be used on another policy
so let rephrase my question

With all but one insurer, yes, but you will have to declare who the main driver is. Most online systems dont allow you to do this and just assume its the policyholder so you'll probably be driven to the phones to actually buy which may mean the loss of any "online discount". Many dont remove it if you start online and finish on the phone because their website cant cope with you but some do.
Also remember to correctly declare who the vehicle owner/ keeper is in relation to the Ph (ie you)0 -

But the norm is that the NCD is awarded to the policyholder irrespective of who is the main driver.0
