Oddjob person

Options
I want someone to do a load of odd jobs in our house. Things like polyfilla cracks, fix masonry, perhaps even stick up a new garden gate.

I know there are sites where people are rated or bid for jobs, but I also know loads are fixed - i.e. only take good ratings. Where can I find a site that takes both kind of ratings so I can try to find someone trustworthy?

(please don't say 'do it yourself' - if I had the time I would).

I reckon there's 3 to 4 days work so plenty!!
Can we just take it as read I didn't mean to offend you?

I shouldn't bother with the web sites. You should find several handymen advertising in local services magazines.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • Best ask around for someone reliable.

If you are over 60, local Age UK may recommend someone for home maintenance
  • As above, don't bother with websites. Ask friends and neighbours; any local handyman will soon get a reputation in the area - good or bad :) If your local community has a facebook page, posting on there is another good way of "asking neighbours", so to speak.
  • The last suggestion is helpful - thanks. We've struggled to find anyone that friends or neighbours recommend.

Just be very aware that they will most likely be operating without any insurance cover whatsoever.
Call it a calculated risk, it's your choice, but if you ask them to fix the wiring or the gas fire,:eek::eek:, well, I'm sure you get my drift:A:A
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

I find the local parish magazine a goldmine of reliable and cheap workmen.

Hi, here in Derbyshire there is a website run by Trading Standards called Trusted Trader. It isn't biast and all the firms I've used from it have been really good. You could see if your Trading Standards runs something similar? Just be careful though, since they did this companies have jumped on the band wagon with similar names eg truster trader etc which aren't Trading Standards but come up on the search. I go through the Councils website to make sure I get the genuine one :D

Problem here is not 1 suggestion so far gives more than a 50/50 chance of getting a decent builder.

You can call me sceptical, but recommendation is the only way, and that probably only reduces the odds down to 75/25. Sorry, but anybody can advertise in the locals/parish mags and get on checkatrtade etc, for at least as long as it takes to fleece half the locality.:mad:

Newsagent advertising boards usually have local handyman, no job too small, type of notices in the window.

Yes, this is my view, hence my posting here for advice.
