any good free smtp servers, or just use gmail?

I understand that gmail is a good way of getting a free & reliable smtp server so you can send email from usual email address on mobile devices (while not connected to the usual isp where one's email address is).

Any other even simpler smtp options, that avoid signing up for a gmail account? I want to avoid putting a smtp program on the laptop as I gather the wandering ip address tends to be identified as a spam source.

I use gmail from my home PC (outlook), mobile phone (3 Mobile Mail) and via the web browser when I'm away and have no probs with it. Which email prog would you use? I found outlook a doddle to set up, haven't tried with Thunderbird but I believe it's ok

Need to use a non-gmail email address but xyz@ntlworld.com will not work for sending unless I am connected to Virgin Media Broadband (used to be NTL).
