lava lamp or home made fizz effects

Ive seen lava lamp DIY videos using alka seltzer and food colouring but they only last say a few minutes.

Is there any way to create either a home made lava lamp or a way to create fizz effect in water that would last min 2 hours on autopilot.

I.e have a glass vase of water and i drop some chemical or tablet in the water and it will create fizz/bubbles (nothing too extreme) for two hours +

You are looking for a reasonably strong chemical reaction, which will last hours, but with minimal amounts of material.

My limited knowledge of chemistry suggests this is unlikely.

There are reactions which take years, but in those cases you'd not observe anything 'interesting.'

You are either looking for something like an alka seltzer tablet which wont last so long, or a piece of sodium, which will blow your house up ! lol


Without a chemistry degree I cannot think of anything that would do.
