Do I have the right to a refund?

Hi all,

I bought a specific item from an online retailer. I don't want to name them as I think they are a good company and I genuinely don't know what the correct information is. I don't think they are trying to skank me, but I am not sure if I should get a refund.

I bought an item from them which they ordered in specially, as it's not an item they normally sell. It's a lid for a cooking pot, which is not normally sold individually without the rest of the pot. So they did me a favour by getting it for me.

I bought it as a present but the person I bought it for told me the wrong size! Now I am stuck with the lid as the retailer says they won't refund me as it was bought in for me as a special item.

Does anyone know what my rights are? I paid £40 plus postage for it.

Thanks very much indeed for any help given x

  • Wrong size as in you ordered the wrong size or they've supplied the wrong size?

This sounds more like you are trying to skank them, not the other way round... (I know you say theyre not, but you are acting unreasonably)

You made the mistake. They did you a favour and now you are trying to land them with a useless cooking pot lid as your friend gave you the wrong size.

I think will come under the 'special order' rules and won't be covered as this is not something they usually sell, nor is it something you can get. If they had just ordered in the pot then I think you could get a refund, but not just for a usually unavailable lid

Try selling it on eBay and see if someone else needs it. I'm assuming you want to order the correct pot lid, and want to keep this retailer sweet to do you another favour?
  • marlipanda - I am not trying to skank anyone and I am being completely reasonable finding out my rights. I am not trying to land them with anything, I genuinely did not know what my rights were in this specific instance. I do know now so thank you for that.

Please do not judge people in future it is not helpful.

I will try to see if I can sell it elsewhere and see how that goes.

I am still on very good terms with this retailer and think highly of them which is why I haven't named them here.

    Take care and thanks again

Have you asked them if they can swap it for the correct lid?

I am all for saving money and exercising your rights, but I do think we have to take responsibility for our own mistakes too, especially when someone has gone out of their way to help.
  • I have asked them and they said they couldn't and I just wanted to check the legal situation. I take full responsibility. Thanks
