Help! Chrome running at 100% of CPU most of the time.....any experts care to advise?

Hi guys/gals. Run windows XP. 1.5gb RAM, 38 Gig physical disk space (old I know!)-9 free. Never have more than 6 tabs on in chrome. Have de-ticked a lot of plug ins (in fact most of them) & have followed a tutorial online & unticked quite a few features in chrome. I run ccleaner every morning at boot up. Have virus scanned with avast-the online cloud one (emisoft?), siperantispyware, malwarebytes, skybot search & destroy (not all running at same time-just avast but done a separate scan on all). I have winpatrol running in background, Auslogics premium boostspped (doesn't seem to use much cpu)& 'the great suspender' is the only chrome app (after 5 mins-activie tabs not highlighted are 'suspended' to save memory).
A virus WAS picked up by avast & is on quarantine (w.32 dropper-gen, win 32 installer-rex, win 32 evo-gen, html script-inf)-a boot scan was done after this time.
Apart from this & my work system (which is cpu light)-no other things open except 5-6 google tabs? Any ideas anyone? I do have things like combofix on for those more technically minded?
Everything is so slow & 'sticky'!
EDit-sometimes 'services.exe' runs high-30-40%?

Thanks for replying! 3-the great suspender-& 2 'myfitness pal add-ons'. Unticked & no difference in CPU. I must stress its not always 100%-but often high & 'sticky'.0

Every time I've looked at Chrome (and rejected it!) I have found that it seems to spawn a significant number of processes which are visible in Task Manager -> Processes tab. There seems to be at least one 'process' per Chrome tab. You are presumably adding all the CPU percentage figures together to get the total usage for Chrome?
You haven't said what CPU your computer uses, but I would suspect that it is not powerful enough to run Chrome rapidly. The fact that services.exe requires a lot of CPU over comparatively lengthy periods might back up that view.
Have you tried doing the same sort of browsing in a recent version of another browser, such as Firefox or (even) Internet Explorer? That may give a better view on whether the problem lies with Chrome or an under-powerful CPU.0 -
Hi-thanks for the reply. IE is even worse. Will try firefox. How do I find out my CPU type/size?0

Is this happening with all websites ?
Have you tried Chrome Incognito window ?
Maybe run MSCONFIG, deselect items in Services & Startup, restart Pc, see if that affects behaviour.
If behaviour was affected, work through these items in batches, then individual items to identify which ones may be causing problem.
Don't include Microsoft Services, keep them selected & hide them.0 -
Hi peter. I have shut down all non-essential start up programmes via win-patrol. Yes-generally on all websites-but for example sites that I guess have more links/scripts in them (an example is tellymix-the big brother section)-is worse than others. Read somewhere else the incognto window might make it quicker-will try this. Just out of interest-why should this speed up chrome?
Edit-hidden microsoft stuff & unticked all services. Re-booting now! In startup only got win patrol, anti virus, ccleaner & auslogics. Nipping out now-will report back this pm!0 -

Our computer recyclers would simply strip down machines like this for the constituent metals, and won't sell anything slower than a Core 2 Duo, now.0
