Police fraud department

Wondering what to expect. I have been fleeced by a local builder. Long story, but will keep short. We had a flyer through the door from the builders who were working on next doors guttering.

Making my house ready for leasing to the council and had a number of jobs to do.

Phoned him up and he was quickly round and I accepted the quotes. First the roof. Well not being able to up ladders I can only take it that it was done to spec. The work he did on the outside of the house was very good indeed.

We needed a new front and back door also 2 windows. We picked out the front door and he said due to discount he would pass over the spec and money to order it. This was early August. so about £1,000 changed hands.

The front door arrived damaged we were told and needed to be re ordered. Mean while he starts on wall repairs. Again level of work standard was OK.

He was away for the bank holiday and was due to start back. He calls at the house and says that his other work team had a difficult job on and could he have a couple of days on that. Weel a week went by and he was back round saying he would start the following Saturday whilst we were away, he has a key. Asked for £1,000 up front labour.

We returned on the Wednesday and found nothing was touched. Constant phone calls went to message. The weekend passes we had a knock on the door from a guy saying that he was unable to contact him and clearly he must have seen his van outside.

Yesterday we went to the door place and you will not be surprised that although he had signed the order no money was paid. We drove to his address, ummmm, he didn`t live there.

I know that he has done work locally and there is no search for him on line.

So I have reported it to the trading standards and also to the fraud squad. IU have no idea what happens next. Any ideas will be very welcomed. Thanks for reading.

One thought- you have changed all your locks haven't you? I would never let anyone like that have a key of their own.

Where do next door say they got his details?
Often putting his details on the internet will connect you with others who are also trying to track him down..

Or an even more interesting question is why OP didn't speak to next door regarding the guttering work which had been done before agreeing work

Next door had no complaints. He had seen the bloke working down the road and that was where the contact was made.
