thank you all for the kind replies. I'll have a think tonight as it really seems a bargain, despite the unusual circumstances.0

When I was looking for a car last year I saw some bargains. Dealer claimed one had been HPI checked and had genuine mileage/FSH.
Got the reg & doc ref from V5 so I could check it. Mileage was all over the place so had obviously been fiddled at some point. If I'd taken the dealer's word I'd have bought a dud.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
Make a note of the phone number of HPI. Take your credit card with you when you go to look at the car. Then you can phone up HPI when you are actually stood in front of the car and can check the number plate and VIN for yourself.
It will take several minutes, but it's got to be better than relying on someone else dictating the details over the phone to you.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
OK, that makes some sens, but I'd assume that the transfer's underway at the mo. Even so, the VIN would be easily visible on a quick viewing of the car, as it's visible on the dash of anything even vaguely recent, so there's really no need for him to be wary about giving that.thanks! the dealer did give me the reg plate no. but not the VIN. kinda understand as I may be out to clone his car or whatever. Now the issue is that he says the reg plate is private and will be taken off.
Just ask him straight - is it on VCAR with a write-off history?0 -
It's a bargain because the dealer has no overheads to build into the price like business rates/rent/electric etc, a lot of scaremongering on here but if you do your homework you could end up with a bargain.0

If you feel the need to post, then there is sufficient doubt to walk away.0
