My electricity usage has suddenly doubled!

  • Have a look around all the wiring outside your house - has any new wires appeared? Perhaps a sneaky neighbour cadging leccy off you.
Check loft for any lights left on. We did that once, but it was before it turned into EON. I think it was over a year.

    Just a quick update-

I called my supplier who agreed that the sudden increase was odd, they gave me an appointment three weeks later for engineer to visit and install a check meter. I waited in all day and no one turned up  Called back and got an apology, £22 credited to my account and another visit booked a further three weeks later.

The engineer came on Friday and straight away said "your meter is knackered, it's reading with zero load". He fitted the check meter and in the past 72 hours the check meter has registered 30 units but my meter has registered 53, so I'm sorry to disappoint the corporate sympathisers but it seems my initial suspicions were right.

PS - fridge freezer is fixed, I bought a new control module for £40 and fitted it, it is fine now :)

I think the 'corporate sympathisers' were just trying to save you getting billed for a meter check when the meter may be fine.

A meter check should be the last thing you get done.
