Switching from SSE to OVO

At the end of June, we moved into our new house. I took the meter readings and made an immediate application to move the supply to OVO. When OVO told us to, we read the meters again.
Meanwhile, SSE sent us a bill. The readings they quoted were way above our actual meter readings, so I amended them and sent the proper opening readings back with a request to put their records right. Another bill came, based on readings that were not the same as the ones I sent to them to correct. Getting frustrating. I rang SSE to discuss and they told me the readings I sent couldn't be right as they were lower than the ones on their system. I told them they were correct and that was the whole point in ringing. The girl said I must have read my meters wrong, so I sent them the photos ;-)
Anyhow, even though the reading were proved to be correct, SSE said they couldn't alter their systems, so another bill was issued based on calculated usage, then a 'correction' applied to arrive at a 'final bill'. This was paid.
OVO continued to take over the supplies, but although the electricity account seemed to swap over OK, the gas account is now reported to be taking 'up to 12 weeks' longer because I've rejected the original gas reading and it'll need to be verified. I'm taking meter readings regularly, but OVO's system is ignoring them because the values are still below the opening readings they have on record.
I suspect all this has been caused by the previous owner not giving closing readings to SSE and them estimating the closing figures (is this possible?). The owner lived 200 miles away and the property was being rented out, but as I understand it there hadn't been any tenants for 8 months prior to us buying.
It all seems very complicated for something that should be so simple!

But did you give opening readings to SSE on occupation, and register for an account?
If the opening readings were correct, then there's little point is worrying about any discrepancy at the point of switching to Ovo, as either one or the other will bill you for the disputed units, and the price difference will be negligible. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
No, we didn't know SSE were the supplier when we first moved in, but did read the meters and sent them these readings when we found out the supplier. When they got in touch, the readings they had were nowhere near the actual readings, and they didn't seem to take any notice of the readings I was sending them after that. The original bill and amended bill didn't have the readings I provided, even before OVO got involved.0

Without opening reads, now impossible to prove either way. It's your job to contact the supplier on moving in, not the other way around. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

How do you find out who the supplier is when moving into a property if you don't know? I've already said I provided SSE with the opening readings as soon as possible when they revealed themselves to be the supplier (it was only a few days after we got the keys).0 -
