Flyglobespan Exeter to Toronto 13:00 flight - now due 07:40 tomorrow - Updated

OMG I've been keeping an eye on the Flyglobespan flight from Exeter to Toronto (Hamilton) today as we are booked on the flight in a couple of weeks time.
The flight comes in from Stansted picks up at Exeter before going onto Canada. All day the Stansted & Exeter flight information sites have been saying delayed, update at ... Then tonight it says the plane is not due in at Exeter until tomorrow morning at 07:40 - thats 19 hours later than planned
Does anyone know what we would be entitled to for this length of delay. I've looked at their T&Cs & it gives waffle about possible delays, but nothing hard & fast.
I think I'm going to regret booking this so called cheap flight.
Cheers Madcow

You'd be entitled to nothing other than being looked after while you are waiting. Possibly to cancel and get a refund.
EU regulated compensation is for delays caused by overbooking or cancellation of the flight, not for delays per se.
The regulations concerning it are extremely badly written by the way, and can be interpreted in all sorts of different ways. The airline will twist them to their advantage. At least it's not Ryanair...
Your holiday insurance will probably pay you a nominal sum - it usually kicks in after 12 hours0 -
Hopefully it's not a regular delay, it might just be a one off, have you been checking it each week? I've never had a problem with Globespan before so hopefully it'll be fine.:smileyhea "here, hare, here" :smileyhea0

Dear Madcow,
To check up on what Flyglobespan has been up to lately regarding late flights and cancelations, enter "Flyglobespan" on Google, then hit the "news" button at the top. You will see some interesting accounts of a recent similar incident. But 17 hours is nothing. The passengers of flight Y2 202 were stranded in New York City for 6 days! I was one of them. And I haven't had any response from Globespan in 20+ days of trying by phone and email.
I suggest including extra food, water, reading material... and maybe an inflatable pillow.
Good Luck http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/images/smilies/speechless-smiley-040.gif0 -
I'd love to say its a one off, but unfortunately delays like this have become routine for Globespan's longhaul network this summer. Its been a terrible summer, not all of it Globespans fault but they do have to take accountability somewhere.
The EU passenger rights only give limited protection in delay situations but do stipulate that on a delay over 4 hours for longhaul you are entitled to meals and refreshments and a hotel if an overnight delay. You are also entitled to cancel your ticket with a full refund after five hours. However, any other bookings (hotels car hire etc) are not the airline's responsibility. Your insurance will also pay a lump sum for flight delays.
However, try to remain positive, although long delays have been common, there are still many flights that do go on time.0 -

OMG that last post is horrendous  I won't be telling wifey about that one !
Just an update on the original situation....
The delayed Stansted/Exeter/Hamilton flight disappeared off of the Stansted & Exeter websites this morning & I phoned Exeter airport at 11:00 to see what was happening. I was told that the Globespan plane had technical difficulties & they were just boarding. So the plane ended up about 22 hours late
Just looking at the Hamilton airport website it appears that all the Globespan planes arriving today are either delayed or cancelled. So they are cocking things up big style.

If the delay is more than 5 hours AND overnight, then Globespan are obliged to provide hotel accom as well as meals, refreshments, phonecalls
If it is over 5 hrs but NOT overnight- meals+refreshments, phone calls only.
Unless they contact you otherwise, you MUST turn up for check in at your normal time.
Globespan are a decent airline, however IMO they have expanded their long haul routes much too quickly.I really hope they sort it out.0 -
This weeks update....
Plane was 20 minutes or so late taking off from Stansted & also at Exeter but actually made up time getting to Canada & arrived early. So let's hope our flight is similar to this week's rather than last!

This is an update of what our Flyglobespan experience was like......
Generally all went to plan planes took off on time & gained time during the flight so we arrived slightly ahead of schedule. We flew premium economy so food & drink was included. The food was as good as aircraft food can be, drinks including beer or wine was provided, plus coffee & tea & a late in flight snack. The plane was an ex Icelandair Boeing B757-200 in Flyglobespan colours. The plane was a bit tired inside but generally clean & comfortable. There was inflight entertainment of a film each way (Shrek 3 & Spiderman 3, plus TV programmes) & earphones were provided. TVs folded down from the ceilings above the lockers & were one TV for each two rows of seats. There did appear to be some double seat booking experienced by a few passengers on the outbound & return flights, but they were all swiftly accomodated & some were upgraded to business class.
So all in all for an economy flight from a local airport to Canada it all went well & no Globespan tale of disaster to tell, thankfully & what we experienced we would fly with them again.

Good to hear it. They have had a kicking recently, but should come through and we will all be better for it. Taking on the big boys long haul cant be easy. Its in our interests for more competition on these long haul routes. Look what happens to prices. DOWN0
