Any Narrow Hedge Recommendations?

Hi,

I need to put something along the edge of my drive in order to protect my car and ideally would like a hedge of some description. As I will have to lose some of my drive to the hedge I would need it to be as narrow as possible and a height of about 1 metre. I don't mind having to cut it back occasionally but don't want anything that requires a lot of maintenance. Can anyone recommend any hedges that I can consider?

Thanks.

What are you trying to protect it from? Midget hubcab thieves?

All hedges need maintenance. I would suggest putting up a fence and grow a clematis over it - such as Montana which grows quickly and produces lovely flowers in the spring.

The only thing that fits your requirements is a fence.
  • If you put Clematis montana on a fence then after a year or two the clematis will be high maintenance - mine easily puts on 12 feet of growth in a season.

I wonder about yew "fastigiata" - evergreen columns that will knit into a hedge very, very slowly. There's a similar form of Ilex crenata - again slow growing. Or you could go with box, if your area's box blight free.

    (Or, yes, a pretty fence!)
  • Very tricky, anything which stays narrow won't naturally knit-together to the next bush to form a good hedge length-ways.

I'd go for a picket-fence which will give instance protection and then add plants for variety
