Travel Money Exchange

Hi,
Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I thought I would give it a go!
I ordered Euro's online and they sent €100 notes and I have been trying to change them to smaller denominations and have been refused at Sainsbury's and M&S Travel money. They say they cannot do this and only change the money back to sterling.
Does anyone know why this is? Surely, exchanging like for like shouldn't be a problem when I could walk into a bank and ask them to change a sterling £100 note?
I haven't tried a bank yet.
Thanks in advance!

But why do you need them changing? Don't worry about them being accepted, most countries are very relaxed about high demonination notes, it's not like here where £50's are looked upon with suspicion by most retailers. I've used €100 notes to pay for stuff under €10 and they don't bat an eyelid, they take it and give change.
Assuming you're flying somewhere, you could always try at the exchange desk at the airport you land at. They'll likely change a note or two for you.0 -
Most currency outlets won't swap 100 euro notes for smaller notes as you've found out very few people want them and if they're forgeries we stand to lose a lot of money. We don't swap any size notes unless the customer has the receipt on them to say they purchased them at a Thomas cook shop. We often get customers who've purchased their euros at the bank come in with lots of fifties wanting to swap them because they wanted smaller notes.0

 I ordered the currency online. It surprises me they send out €100 notes when most people wouldn't be happy. Thanks for all replies!! Most countries in Europe don't bat an eyelid at a €100 though, I've had €200 notes and had no problem using them in Italy, France & Germany. It only seems to be here that people get all hung up over a £50.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

how did you arrive at this conclusion?
I've never met anyone who doesn't like €100 notes. The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -

I'd love 100 euro notes if you're giving them away.
8 out of 10 of our euro customers don't even want 50's never mind 100's, they all ask for 5's, 10's and 20's. It's more business people that want larger notes definitely not families. In fact some of the people that go all inclusive don't even take 100 euros they say "Ooh i'm going all inclusive I won't need any money"0 -
