Insurance coverage for university student under 18

Hi

Will be putting this in the student forum as well in case anyone thinks I'm spamming or something.

I've just found out from Endsleigh that my 17 year old son can't get insurance until he's 18 (end of October). His halls (Liberty owned, University linked) provide cover inside the residence, but obviously not when he's taking his laptop etc out with him.

It's only a four week gap, but it does seem harsh that he can't get cover at 17. He can't be alone in this, surely?

Our home insurance covers student possessions within 'University owned halls' and could be extended except for the fact that Liberty Living isn't counted as University Halls of residence and as such no cover can be granted.

Any help or experiences would be appreciated:).

Speak to your Home Insurers again. If you have something in writing to say that these are the halls of residence provided by the University, they should be ok with this. The policy wording is just about excluding people who move to shared accommodation in a rented house away from the University.

The reason for the 18 year old issue, is that they only allow someone 18 or more to sign up to the contract. This is fairly common with Insurance contracts.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

I did explain precisely the terms of the accommodation but a supervisor confirmed it had to be university owned and run. It is neither, although it was the university that allocated it!

Ironically Endsleigh will be providing contents cover within the accommodation block but can't extend it outside.

But then it's Liberty Living who have the block policy, not me or my son.
