    Whatever Happens won't cover theft, which from my University experience is the most likely thing to happen to render the laptop useless to your son.

    Again - can you not insure the laptop for him? You can take out a protect my bubble policy? Then next year he can?

    His current net worth is about £1,000. Is it worth insuring against that? It will cost you an absolute fortune, relative to what you are actually protecting. Insurance is supposed to be for expensive things that would be difficult to recover from. For a mobile phone and a laptop, you are throwing money down the drain.
