What should I do?

We have been accepted in principle for a mortgage in the past few days.
It's a long story how it came about but basically we found out a couple of days ago that we owe a large sum of money (over £1000) to our old gas/electric supplier. It appears on my equifax as a U for the past 10 months or so with an outstanding balance of £0, however on speaking to the company they say it is about to be passed over to a debt agency and we may get a default. I really don't want this.
I'm happy to pay the money if we owe it (there was some dispute about meter reading etc) but now I'm so scared that I've accepted we will just have to pay it anyway. However we can't really afford to pay it all unless I put it on the credit card. If I do start paying it will it be marked negatively on my credit report? I'm worried that once we submit our full mortgage application that the company will credit check us again and something may have changed with this debt and then we will lose the mortgage. Any advice will be very much appreciated!

You need to address the issue pronto. As mortgage lenders are highly likely to check your files again. So you don't want something adverse detected.
