Down sizing...but how?

I currently run a 2.0 Toyota Avensis CDX (leather seats, air con, elec everything, etc), it's only an old 'S' reg but I love it. Mileage is about 89k making it worth circa £1700 - £2000. Thing is it's costing me too much to run, I seem to be forever putting petrol in it, so I want to downsize, ideally to a car in the lower tax bracket.

Other than being lucky enough to find someone willing to straight swap my loaded Avensis for a similarly loaded small car I have a dilemma. No garage is going to swap my car like for like, so my plan is to buy a very cheap run around sell my car and take the cash to look for something suitable. Is this a sound idea? It seems a lot of hassle. Any other suggestions?

Also can anyone recommend a car? Something very frugal, reliable, leather and electrics would be nice to, all for about £1500 - £2k?

the trouble is large cars with leather etc only come on a high spec model, such as a 2.0L or a 1.8, if you do lots of miles it may be worth investing in LPG, a new system would cost you a grand but a second hand can be purchased and installed within 500 or so

lol :) thanks. At least I know that I'm just being ignored now, or perhaps I'm just beyond help....it has been said ;)

I had considered the LPG route but I'm not sure. It's still not wide spread and the people at the pumps always seem to be having some sort of problem. I also can't afford to invest even £500 in the car.

I've found a Peugeot 306 diesel that I may be able to do a deal on. Parker says that it does 45mpg compared to my Avensis's 34mpg. This sounds quite a significant difference to me. Would it amount to a great saving?

Also only group 4 insurance instead of 13 for mine.
