applying for a US visa - what is it like?

Hi all,

as i have a common assault charge from 2010 on my file (still regret this big time) i need to apply for a US visa B2 the long way..

has anyone got any ideas of what its like and any issues or things to keep an eye out for?

i need to get a certificate from the police which costs £45, get a photo signed and a load of other long winded application steps before i get to the interview at the embassy which costs about £100.

any tips please? :)

Check the waiting time for an appointment, and bear in mind that it is a matter of months. Some people find it worthwhile to go to Belfast for a shorter wait.

A friend was granted a visa with quite a list of offences. His interview looked at his reasons for travelling (holiday) and whether he intended to stay long term - they wanted to know that he was going to leave when he said he would, so checked funds, employment etc.
  • Do not take a watch or phone or any electronic device with you to the interview or you won't be allowed in.
I understand there is a newsagent nearby who makes a fortune looking after devices for people.
  • You can now take phone's in, you can take cash too there is a place to get a drink inside.

My husband went in in May was back out within half an hour but this was his second time. He was told there was a 5-6 month waiting for the visa to come back from homeland security we're still waiting now but he was recommended to get a 5 year visa.

The first time he went, you wasn't allowed to take anything in so the rules must of changed a little since then as he was allowed his phone. He was in there for 3-4 hours with nothing to drink, read etc. Had to wait 5-6 months then for his visa to come through it was a single entry visa valid for 12 months.

    Hope this helps :)
  • Great site with lots of people going through the same thing - its long but read the whole thread as ALOT has changed since the start of the thread
