Working Tax Credit Debt Management Crack Down

I have received notice of a working tax credit overpayment and have contacted the Debt Management and Banking Arm of the HMRC to discuss a payment schedule.
I am taken aback by how aggressive their questioning is.
I was asked if I can pay the amount back straight away and when I explained that we could not I was then asked if I was able to ask friends or family for the money or was I able to discuss a loan with my bank.
I appreciate they may have certain questions they have to ask but this line of questioning puts people under a lot of undue stress and pressure.
I need to get back to them with a list of our income and expenditure but I'm not hopeful as I have read other examples where ANY dispensable income at the end of the month will be expected to be directed towards your overpayment.
I'm not sure if they investigate your incomings and outgoings or whether proof is required. Does anyone know ?

Hi OP,
You have to present a statement of affairs, including income and outgoings to show disposable income that can be used to pay off debts, including HMRC. I don't see how they could request you send proof of this in, but I may be incorrect on that; just overestimate your figures, and don't forget things like haircuts, birthdays, christmas etc. And yes, any income left over will be requested to be used for payment of debt, that is correct.
Why not use the MSE budget tool?0 -
That's probably because when nice and open to any suggestion, 99% of people in this situation claim that they can't pay back more than £10 a month and their debt never really get paid back. So they are coming across tougher so that repayment are more realistics and truly in line with what people can repay rather than want to repay.0

I think it would work as any other debt. Be sensible and realistic.
You could post an SOA of the debt free wannabe forum. People there will give advice on what's allowable outgoings.0
