Cheap/easy way to sell shares

My mother has received some shares from my late father. They have been transferred into her name after probate.

She wants to sell them. They are worth around £26K in four holdings. Most are Ordinary shares, one is non certified. She now has the certificates.

They're with Equniti and it has taken an age to get this far with them given that her husband died eighteen months ago.

I know Equiniti will sell them. I can't find how much for on their website however. Anyone know?

She'd like to do it cheaply and quickly. Any help/thoughts would be gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks.

if you have the share certificates, then you can open any online trading account, send the certificates in, wait for them to be added to your account and then sell them online for around £10 per company transition so £40 total dealing costs for your 4 holdings.

I use interactive investor (https://www.iii.co.uk) who don't make any charge for transferring into the account, but you need to check this as it will affect your costs.

Looks like Equiniti would charge a minimum of £45 per holding.

Get your mum to open an account with X-O, send in the certificates and sell for £5.95 per holding.

Vortigern - Thank you for posting the link to the shareview charges.

Roughly how long would it take for shares to sell and the money to be with you? I'm guessing that if she opens an online account that it would take longer to sell them - or is that not necessarily so?
Equiniti have been so slow thus far with her. The online selling option definitely seems cheaper.

If your mum were to use X-O, she would have to:
    • Open an account online
    • Post the certificates to X-O, with transfer forms (4 days)
    • Place sell order online with X-O (immediate)
    • Await settlement date (3 days)
    • Email to request cash withdrawal from X-O (5 days)

If she sells certificates through Equiniti, she would still have to post the certificates back to them. It might be easier and slightly quicker, but very much more expensive on their percentage charge.

Share certificates are expensive to replace if lost in the post. Many people would advise using Special Delivery to insure against that possible expense.
