Replacing a 5 yr old machine that is slowly dying.
Would like i5 processor, 1TB HD, 6G RAM. Needs to be carried round a lot, so lightweight would be good, don't really need a Disc drive as I have an external one, so thinking that one without would be lighter.
I have been happy with Toshiba before, so happy to go that way again.
One more question if I may, I have office 2007 on discs that was bought for windows XP, will it install on a windows 8 machine (as they all seem to be)?
Very grateful for any suggestions.

What's wrong with current machine? Mechanical? Five years old can still have good specs.

Son's machine, it's been hammered, Very little battery life and I have twice replaced the battery. It is an Dell inspiron 15, needs more RAM and HD space and is heavy. Tracker pad is liquid damaged. It makes an odd noise and fails to start every now and then. I think it has 2GB RAM and 250 GB HDD, but would need to check that.
I have a use for it as a secondary machine, so am happy to get him a new one.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Havea look at Hotukdeals...... lots of i5's on offer there, within your budget. I can't comment on individual laptops but there's a few to choose from if that's what you are really after.

I wouldn't do refurbs.
There was also the slight advantage that buying from Argos meant it was instantly available.
I am slightly relieved that you didn't post a scathing reason why that was a terribly bad buy.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I'm not surprised that you wrote that you wouldn't do refurbs.
The laptop that I'm using is also a shop return, from Argos. It had the same warranty conditions as a 'new' machine and still had the original plastic wrapping. More than five years later, I'm still using it.
'Refurb' has nothing to do with it, as long as you have the same condition as new and the warranty conditions as new.
A simple example....if you decided to return your Argos machine and to buy the Medion, the Argos machine can no longer be resold as new. So it will be checked and cleaned and then sold as a 'refurb'.
I'm quite happy to purchase a laptop under those circumstances.
Especially if it fit and surpassed my original criteria.
i5 instead of i3
8GB RAM instead of 4GB
SSD for faster startup
Relatively lightweight @ 1.9kg
Nothing wrong with the Toshiba(I'm using one now), but it's not a bargain.0
