Halifax clarity

I'm living in Phnom Pehn as a volunteer teacher and went to quite a lot of trouble to receive this card. I received it in Bangkok and it worked once and was fine (and free). Then I came home (to cambodia) and couldn't get it to work in the Canadia bank (the only fee free atm here). After a few weeks I phoned halifax and they said the atm is chip and signature but the card is chip and pin, which is silly as my caxton fx works there fine.

They said find another atm, but the fees are flat, about four usd, and the maximum amounts very low. They told me to get a counter advance, but the banks either refuse, or try and it won't work.

I can use it in a couple of supermarkets, though there's a high minimum spend.

I googled online and a lot of people complain it's a hit or miss to get this card to work around the world. Ironic, as it's designed to appeal to world travellers.

Worked and still working perfect for me both in the US, other countries in Europe, the middle east and even in Hong Kong! No problems whatsoever.
  • What on earth is a chip and signature ATM? What does it look like and where is it situated?

Some Asian countries are having trouble with Mastercard. Mastercard itself will give you the blurb that it is accepted everywhere. It isn't. You might need a Visa.
  • I have no idea what a 'chip and signature' atm is. I think they were saying the atm can't read a UK chip, which is silly as I've used caxton and a metrobank card in exactly the same atm.

Visa kind of defeats the option as it's expensive to use. It is, I think, a Mastercard issue. Quite a few smaller shops here only accept visa, including the doctors clinic I visited. The big supermarket accepts the mastercard, but a fifteen dollar minimum, and only five minimum for visa.

No idea what the issue is, really.

I went travelling round SE Asia with a clarity and had no problems with my Clarity. The only thing was that Vietnamese ATM's charged a fee, but this is due to their banks, there is nothing Halifax can do about that.
  • It's strange it seems to work for everyone and not me.
