Hi,
I am separating and just waiting for my husband to move out so I can claim whatever benefit I am entitled to as a single mum working part time.
My question is: If I am entitled to claim working tax credit or child tax credit will they take into account the joint income for the tax year or will it start to count from the day I am living without my husband at home?
Because my income will be less after he leaves.
Thanks

  • Thanks,
but income I had last tax year was joint with my husband wasn't it?
This is what I don't understand.
Tried to use the calculator as a single parent but they ask me to put my income (joint if I was part of a couple...)
I just want to avoid overpayment and confusion before I apply.

You don't need to wait for him to move out to claim as single person..

Is that really true? I was told that any man and woman living together would be regarded as a couple, and would need to put a joint claim in, as far as tax credits are concerned.
I looked into it when a friend needed somewhere to stay a few years back, and I considered having him as a temporary lodger. I rang and asked if it would be a problem, and they basically said that if they allowed single claims on that basis, then there would be nothing stopping couples from pretending that one of them was just a lodger, and putting single claims in...
I don't think I can hang on til Friday...
  • Hi.
When I first called asking for advice, I said I could not claim as single if my STBXH was still living at the same address.
This morning I called just to ask for them to send me an application form so I can fill in and send to them as soon as he moves home. The attendant started asking questions and as we are truly separated, sleeping in different rooms and I am no longer cooking/cleaning/washing for him, she decided I could claim as a single and completed my application over the phone straight away. It wasn't a new one since we have had a claim ages ago that had stopped. She just updated that one.
Now waiting for him to move.
