I have 2 questions please.
Firstly does anyone know the cost of a visa for a resident of the USA to come here to study....
and secondly how EXACTLY does employment regulation and taxation work for such a student? Do they need an NI number?
Thanks.:)

I seem to recall US students at my uni weren't able to work legally due to been on a student rather than an employment visa....however a quick google says 10 hours a week maximum.

The costs they will face are far greater than those of the visa, so this is a minor consideration. And there is lots of supporting documentation to provide, and the whole application must be EXACTLY right, otherwise it is rejected and the fee is lost.0 -
Thanks so much for your answers.
I did of course google for info before posting and my reason for the main enquiry is the student in question has paid £800 in the US whereas our official sites vary between £300 and £500 as to the supposed costs so I am puzzled.
Also have checked out tier 4 conditions and there seems to be some discrepancy between 10 and 20 being the allowed number of hours paid work allowed.
So wondered if anyone has personal experience and knows for sure?
I'm thinking they maybe have some of these web sites like we do for instance the one for the EHIC card where if you're not careful you pay more than you need.
Thanks again.0 -

On the cost: visit the website for the UK embassy in the USA to see the fees in dollars. Although the amount of the fee is set by Parliament in pounds, you have to pay in the currency of the country where you are applying. They do the currency conversion using a special exchange rate so it always costs a bit more than it should. So see if the fee he paid in dollars is correct: not that there is a lot to be done about it is he was over-charged.
On working hours: ask the international office at the university where he plans to study. They will know the law and how it is interpreted: they will also be able to advise on whether working to that extent is compatible with his planned course of study. For example, the MA course that I once ran required fifty-hour weeks for a fair amount of the time, so no-one could possibly have coped with the course while doing any kind of job.0 -
As an add on; can my American relative open a UK student bank account same as a UK national?
What if the course is shorter than 3 years eg part of the Erasmus programme or similar?
Thanks.0
