Sending ECU off for repair - online company?

Our mechanic sent me to a local autospark/tuners as it's looking like my ECU is acting up.
This chap said he'd only send it off to see if they could repair it so i may as well do that myself.

Going off what he described of the website it's ECU testing. I've also read a bit of a shout for ECU doctor.

So have any of you used either of these & have anything to say +/- about them?

ECU Testing: http://www.ecutesting.com/
ECU Doctor: http://www.the-ecu-doctor.co.uk/

Biggest concern is shelling out £100s & it being no different but i guess you takes your chances as the other option is to run it in its current state which is a no no.

My trusted mechanic has nothing good to say about BBA Reman.

ECU Testing in Ilkeston did my ABS Controller a few years ago. Two day turnaround for £125.

    Great service and value.

Well your ecu-doctor one is a non trading individual. That puts me off straight away.
Digging through the owners details also puts me off...

  • I had two VDU ECU's repaired by http://www.carelect.demon.co.uk/index.html several years ago, i'm still driving one of the cars some 6 or 7 years later.

I have no connection with the company other than as a satisfied customer.

My indy workshop is impressed with BBA Reman.
  • Thanks.

Also that is interesting, since it was on this very website that after a bit of googling I saw numerous shouts for "ECU Doctor" & when I googled that the link I provided is what turned up. I can't remember how old that thread was now.

Anyway, fingers crossed they can sort the problem.

  • Yes it was actually a thread you'd posted in it turns out.

I've been put on to an alternative which i was wondering if anyone here had experience of...

    ECUS TO GO: http://www.vauxhall-ecu.com/

By all accounts you give them your VIN number & they code up an ECU for you specific to your car. It's simply plug-n-play. You send back your ECU for the warranty. Job done & cheaper too.

Sounds brilliant, yet also sounds too good to be true.
  • Never seen that company before.

Might be good, might not be.

What i learned due to making two grave errors when trying to source a cheaper repair for the second ECU failure, is that a snazzy looking website means nothing at all, and that there are unscrupulous people out there, who will fleece you for ''testing'' an ECU, finding nothing wrong with it and returning it still faulty....nice little earner that for receiving a unit, repacking it and sending it back.
I also learned there are people out there who will find your ECU unrepairable and to ''save you money'' offer to not return the ''scrap unit'', that being the same ECU that the company i linked to earlier diagnosed and repaired without any problems, albeit not cheaply, but then as in many things in life cheapest isn't always best.

Thing is some of these ECU's are in short supply and some parts are a problem, for some, and thats what my unit was being recruited for, parts.

I stress, that i have no knowledge of the company in Cleveland you linked to, the two shysters i encountered were at the opposite ends of the country, it's quite likely the Cleveland crew are decent people, the only way you'll find out is by trying them out...just keep your wits and bull shine meter switched on.

I also haven't used the company i had good service from for about 6 years, a lot can change in that time, they did high quality work when i last used them.
