Has anybody been on JSA for over two years?

Do they ask to see proof of savings once a year?

At the beginning of the claim, you will have been informed about things you needed to tell them about.
One of these things was savings.
if you don't tell them, then you both risk an overpayment, as well as possible prosecution if that overpayment is large as well as penalty payment for not informing them.

Not automatically. If they have any reason to question your level of savings they can ask for statements.
It's generally in your own best interest to keep them informed of your savings level as it will generally be reducing. If you have saving of below £16k, but above the lower threshold, you should definitely provide them with statements every time the savings drop by £250 as the amount taken off your benefit will reduce by £1 for every £250. They won't thank you for doing it as it creates additional work, but it's the only way to be sure they aren't stopping more than they should. If you take a bank statement in 3 months after the event they will not back date the calculation.
If your savings do increase you must let them know immediately too.
