Is zinc plating better than a lacquered finish for gate furniture?

Have bought a tall, wooden garden gate and am now wondering whether to buy the 'metal bits' (black lacquered) from the same supplier at well over £20.

I can see offers on the net of the same 'gate furniture pack', only zinc plated, for a considerable saving.

Any advice please?

The black lacquered ( painted ) ones will eventually rust.
The galvanised ones will certaily last an awful lot longer.
    Thats only my experience though.

  • What Firefox said plus Stainless steel will last a lifetime and probably outlast the gate... Black Japanned ironmongery is no longer durable, years ago it was excellant stuff.

Zinc plating isn't the same thing as galvanizing and will not prevent rust for very long.

If there is an option for stainless or galvanized, go for them. if not buy the zinc plated ones and paint them.
