I did try chipsaway (or similar) but repair is not feasible.
The car is a Merc SLK

Mercs are solid cars, but there was a period when the bodywork would suffer blistering and bubbling on the paint and laquer deterioration.

How many years ago is 'several years'?
Your civil claim would have been tricky at the time, but 'several' years on it's a waste of time and money.
Why did you not take action at the time, and why do you want to do so now?

I would never take my car to one of the hand wash places that have sprung up around the uk in the last few years

They are cheap and quick but to achieve the results they do they use very harsh chemicals, they often use caustic based traffic film remover on the bodywork and acid based wheel cleaner on the wheels, the stuff they use will easily strip any wax or sealant that you have on your car and acid based wheel cleaner will in time destroy the finish on your alloys

And don’t get me started on the people that go around the supermarket with a cleaning cart offering to wash your car, they have one bucket of water that they seem to use all day and a sponge that I wouldn’t wash my wheels with

I paid a lot of money for my car and I don’t particularly enjoy cleaning it but I wouldn’t let these hand wash gangs anywhere near it

    I've been Money Tipped!
Just out of interest, you say you had sold the car already and the buyer pulled out because of the damage. I presume when the buyer made the offer the car must have been in tip top condition, so why then go to a hand car wash place straight afterwards?

    Doesn't add up.

In the essence of short answers.

I think you have about as much chance as plaiting fog to get any compensation from the hand car wash place "A few years" on.

German paint is usually rock hard, VAG anyway. Mercedes went through a rough build quality period - see loads of rusty older one's with scabby paint.

    Sounds perfectly reasonable to me
