I have legitimate Windows discs, can I use them?

A friend built a desktop pc for my mum. When I had problems with the hard drive and took it for repair, they installed a copy version of Windows.

I have a desktop and laptop, both supplied by Dell with genuine versions of the Windows software.

Can I install this version of Windows on her pc to avoid all the the WGA problems and to ensure she can get all the latest Windows updates?

Thanks
VanMan

It's the licence (serial key) that has to be legitimate or not. Dell OSes are OEM and can NOT be legally transferred to any other computer. If she doesn't have a legal copy of windows it may be possible to get one free or heavily discounted from Microsoft if she explains the situation and tells them who installed the illegal copy.

Also check to see if there are any stickers on the back/side with the serial code on, if so just install using that code and that is legal.

I used the same disk to install on two machines but with their own original (and unique) serial codes.

I assumed they didn't have a legal key because of the "WGA problems"

    ah of course.

Although i was under the impression critical updates (excluding ie 7) were still given to "dodgy" key codes?

I think they (MS's philosophy is reducing zombie machines takes priority over piracy) are but if you also install WGA then it will cause a headache with constant warnings about your copy being illegal and of course if you want to download anything else media play, bit defender or any other MS freebie I don't think it'll let you.
