We have a Qashqai+2 (1.6 petrol) and neither of us like driving it because the car really needs a bigger engine.
A few years ago we had a VW Touran and I didn't like it but couldn't say why. It was only after we got the Qashqai that I realised it was simply down to the engine and lack of power (I call it our Fred Flintstone car, because it makes me feel like peddling hard to make it go faster, lol). We have decided no more 1.6 engines for us.
I think the real reason for getting the car was the 1.6 diesel engined option, only available in nissan or renault form.
To explain Renault spent over 50million quid developing this engine that replaces the 2.0 diesel.
It, the 1.6 dci carried a penalty of well over £1500 over the 1.5dci.
It's the strongest feature of the car, I love it.
I did try the 1.5, probably as gutsy as the 1.6 petrol, poor in performance and lacking in confidence for any overtaking maneuvers.
I'm a member of a Nissan forum, the Qashqai is known as the "almost car";);)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

If you want a slightly smaller car than the Qashqai then its odd looking sister Juke is a decent car. It is high off the ground so easier for getting in and out. Everyone will tell you it has a tiny boot and cramped at the back but the new 2014 model has a much larger boot and higher at the back. We got my wheelchair, two big suitcases and some other bags in it with no problem. We got a good spec 1.5 diesel model which takes off like a rocket and we can get 450+ motorway miles from a single tank. It also does not have any advance payment. We had the model with A/C, electric windows back and front and darker privacy glass at the back for no advance payment. It is not for everyone but its a lovable car if you want a smaller higher car0 -
To be honest the qashqai doesn't really have enough space, it's much shorter than the Megane estate I had before. The issue is getting my fishing gear in there without it intruding into the passenger compartment.
Maybe the +2 version would have been better, but the other things I don't like would still be there.
For anyone considering a new one, the model has changed, the +2 is no longer available but the new car is slightly larger and longer, is lighter and also cheaper, but I still wouldn't be tempted again, I've sat in 1 and not enough has changed for me, but it's What Car's car of the year again so what do I know,:D

We went for the Ford S-Max. It's a 7-seater, but we never have the rear seats in position! Plenty of boot space .... opted for the 1.6 petrol (the turbo has quite a punch
), and paid extra for the privacy glass in the back to protect littl'un.
