an alternative to gardening gloves....

Daughter recently did the Tough Mudder challenge - she bought some cheap weightlifting type gloves from ebay (£1.99 I think), ie leather palms, yet fingerless.

She was going to bin these  but having taken a second look at them they are fab for gardening, your fingers are free for the twiddly bits, yet your palm is protected from thorns and stings.

Also they keep your hands warm without being detrimental to your dexterity.

My son has just done the tough mudder me and his mum thought that he would struggle and probably injure himself but he proved us both wrong and made it look easy. He's doing it again next year and has encouraged his sister to have a go too.

The ratio of splinters and thorns in the palm : fingers is about 1:20 here.

    Am I missing something?

I use old suede gloves - superb for gardening :T.

It's my finger ends I want to protect more so then the palms - can't stand grubby fingernails!

I have tried all sorts of gloves (I wear the fingers out weeding) and my favourites are the cheapest ones you can buy. The stretchy (neon colour ones) where the palm of the hand and fingers are that rubbery stuff.

They don't look very "glam" but I wouldn't use any others now.

Glad I found this thread - I'm using the rubber ones as well but sadly thorns do go through (we have tall thistles and brambles) and I hate the stiff leather gloves. Can anyone recommend something thorn proof but flexible? Probably impossible to find....

All I can add is it's Wilko garden sale time.... Gloves half price at mine now but, give it a week or two, and they'll be 20p a pair - if they have any left.

Plant labels were 5p for 50 for the diddy four inch ones... So I can go mad with the labelling, as I spent £1.60 on labels alone. :D
