moving into a new flat,it's a HA flat so it will be empty, first time ever I have the chance to decorate a flat, as all the rest have been furnished..
Problem is I don't earn much, the flat will be empty apart from a bed and TV, as that's all I have from the old flat
Just really looking for tips on getting cheap white goods, cooker fridge and washer. (I know about freecycle) is it better to spend more on the cooker or washer etc
Carpets too, do I go cheap as possible or wait a bit longer and save for half decent carpet, same for paint, seen B&Q do 3 tins of dulux 2.5l paint for £40, or do I go cheaper. (will a tin of 2.5l do a smallish room?)
never done this before so just not sure where my money will be better spent.

Your money is better spent paying the rent on both properties before you go shelling out for furniture and paint.
Once your rent is up to date then you could look at the British Heart foundation for furniture and electrical goods. I find TK Maxx good for good quality kitchen items, bedding and towels.
For flooring, if you're flexible on what you can live with then sometimes you can get end of roll leftovers at a discounted price.0 -

I would be saving for furnisher, after sorting rent out have no money for a while, it's a longer term thing.0 -
My OH had to buy the absolute cheapest fridge, washing machine and cooker when he got his place. Ten years later the fridge and washing machine were still going strong. The cooker still worked but was a bit if a wreck. I say get whatever you can for free now, what you can't get for free and can't live without buy cheap. Anything you can wait for you should save and buy what you actually want when you can afford it, that way you won't be 'buying twice'.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0

Hi does the HA consider it in need of decoration or is it a personal choice? If so check if they do vouchers to get any of the work done. I know they give vouchers here if they consider the flat you move into in need of decoration. It probably won't cover the whole cost but could save you money.
You may find it cheaper with carpet if you go for a neutral shade the whole way through the flat. I also found it cheaper to get a reduce price left over roll- carpet firms will have left over bits of carpet from when they have fitted jobs which they sell for less. I would take a trip to the local companies and get a mental price of how much the carpet will cost.
B&Q were doing two tins of Crown paint for £18 which is cheaper than 3 Dulux at £40. Of course their own paint is quite good too. Again you could save money if you use a colour in more than one room. B&Q also allow you to return for refund within a reasonable period items you have not opened.Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.0 -
If you have a facebook account you can use the free sites on there that are in your area.
I have donated loads of things that way and the people receiving them have all started out with nothing.
I wish you every happiness in your new home.0 -
Do you have a paint reuse centre near you? Something like Community Repaint? They sell on part tins etc for about £1 a litre if you are not worried about getting a colour exactly as per colour chart!0

cheers will check out the Crown, had my dulux all picked out :rotfl:
To be fair the flat is in very good condition, just a few patches where picture holes have been filled in.0
