Considering Alexandria

I've always wanted to see the library/lighthouse, so planning on ~ a week in november. Weather is 17-28 degrees, so plenty hot for me.

Question is - shuold I get a hotel in town, or should I stay slightly out if I ahve a good deal - for example - http://www.radissonblu.co.uk/hotels/egypt/alexandria

Also, I'm trying to work out flights. Currently planning on a week in Portugal, and flights to Alexandria appear to be cheapest through Istanbul. I've never been there so it might be a good place to stop over for a couple of nights? I would then get a return flight back to the UK.

Any thoughts on where to stay, and what to do with connecting flights/stopovers?
