New boiler - British Gas quoting 6k

Hello

I have a 2 bedroom house with all electric heatings, I'd be putting in radiators in the kitchen, bathroom, living room, dining room and 1 heater per bedroom - 6 in total.

It's a fairly standard mid 19c colliery type cottage.

British Gas have quoted me just under a few pennies under 6000 for a new install, Worcester Bosch boiler with 10 year warranty.

I know this quote is pie in the sky and the rep. was very keen for me to agree to this on the spot - can anyone who has recently had a new gas central heating install, give me some ballpark figures for a new install on a small-ish house with 6 radiators.

I'm in the north of England.

Thanks a lot :)

Do you have gas in the house already?

Always get 3 or 4 quotes then you'll have an idea of a fair price

We did not need new radiators as i fitted new ones earlier but a new combi boiler,3 thermostatic rad valves, wireless room stat,de-sludge cleaning and inhibitor was £1495.00.
We also paid £250.00 for a Magnaclean filter and 7 years total warranty, the boiler came with two years warranty.
Hope this is of some help to give you a guide to pricing.

PS we live in the NE of England so may be more expensive if you live in the south.

Thanks for the reply, that sounds quite reasonable, I know the British Gas quotes are a rip-offs but even local independants seem to be quoting at least 1k more than I'd expect for the work involved.

if they all are quoting at least £1k more than you expect, then your expectations are wrong !!

Paid about £3,500 for a similar job a couple of years ago. Boiler and flue was over £1,000 of this and we needed some building work to close an old flue outlet.

Thanks, no building work is needed my end - very straight forward.

British Gas are 2.5k over your 3.5k figure, and I've had another quote for 5k for the same job, which seems excessive for a small 2 bedroom house that needs 6 radiators and is no more than 2 days work.

Do you think £5k for a 24w boiler, with 6 radiators, no building work, and 2 days work max (1 install can do it in a day) is reasonable?

I think coming in under 4k is very do-able, that's allowing 2k for the parts, and 1k per day for 2 days work.

I don't think my expectations are wrong - like the British Gas quote, I think it's a case of local installers trying a sly rip-off.

It doesn't or shouldn't cost 5k to put in a combi boiler and 6 radiators into a small terrace house!
  • as this is the first time you have posted the prices of everyone else then we didn't really have anything to go by, it does sound slightly expensive but it isn't 2 days work either, if one co say they can do it in a day then they will prob have three or four guys doing it which isn't one day it's 3 or 4

If BG quote £6K then an independent will probably come in at around £4.5K? 40% extra for an install is fairly typical for BG: get more than one quote from an independent local GSR RGI.
